Perfume is mixture of different types of aroma compounds, essential oils, fixatives and solvents used to give a pleasant smell to the human body, objects, animals and living spaces. The word perfume is derived from the Latin word ‘per fumum’, which means ‘through smoke’. The art of making perfume or perfumery began since ancient times.
All different variety of perfume and cologne are available in the market today. The perfume and cologne companies do extensive research to make the most attractive scent to clatter the different taste of its customers.
Different varieties of perfumes reflect different set of concentration of aromatic compounds in a solvent, which is typically an ethanol mixture with water. Depending upon the concentration of various aromatic compounds, different types of perfumes are defined. The concentration by percent/volume for perfume such as ‘perfume extract’ is 15-40% of the aromatic compounds, for ‘eau de parfum’ is 10-20% of aromatic compounds etc.
Perfume oil is mandatorily diluted with a solvent, because the undiluted oils generally natural or synthetic ones, contain high concentrations of chemical components that may likely result in allergic reactions and possibly affect anyone when applied directly to skin or clothing. As well, the fragrance too in pure perfume oils is far concentrated to smell pleasant. This oil can also be diluted by some of the neutral-smelling oils such as fractionated coconut oil, or liquid waxes such as jojoba oil.
Cologne is also a kind of fragrance which is also known as Eau de Cologne. It was a perfume style, generated from Cologne Germany therefore called by the name cologne. It’s concentration of the essential oil ranges from 2-5% only in a base of dilute ethanol (with 70-90% concentration). It contains a mixture of citrus oils including oils of orange, lemon, bergamot, tangerine, grapefruit and neroli. It can also contain oils of lavender, thyme, rosemary, jasmine and petitgrain.
